Located a stone’s throw from the intersection of Hopetoun, Ponsonby & Crummer where te rimu tahi (the lone rimu tree) once stood, and situated in a heritage building that boasts a long and colourful history. Barrio is an establishment where locals gather to chat, eat, laugh, dance and drink.
Since the 1970s, Ponsonby and its shouldering suburbs have been a haven for artists, musicians, Bohemians, gays & lesbians and a thriving Polynesian community. The area has changed in recent years, with a burgeoning creative class of professionals. But what unites the people of Ponsonby is their openness to new ideas and styles, along with an enthusiasm for rubbing shoulders with like-minded people who appreciate the value of good conversation and music that tickles the soul.
Barrio has a large open courtyard & bar facing Ponsonby Road that attracts the sun in summer and is heated during winter. An intimate upstairs lounge is available for functions, parties, business meetings or just plain hanging out with your friends. If you are driving, we have customer parking at the rear of the building.( Enter via Crummer Road ). Food is available at all times. See the menu page for details.
